Here's what you need to know about how to get started, use the new features, and keep track of updates:

Getting started with iOS 17

Before you download iOS 17, make sure to back up your iPhone. You can do this in iCloud or on your computer.

Once you've backed up your iPhone, you can download iOS 17 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Using iOS 17

Here are some of the new features in iOS 17 and how to use them:

  • StandBy Mode: StandBy Mode turns your iPhone into a smart display when it's docked or charging. You can see widgets, notifications, and other information at a glance. To enable StandBy Mode, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > StandBy Mode.
  • Interactive Widgets: iOS 17 widgets are now interactive, so you can perform actions like playing music, starting a timer, or sending a message directly from the home screen. To add an interactive widget, tap and hold on an empty space on the home screen, then tap the plus button.
  • AirDrop NameDrop: NameDrop is a new AirDrop feature that allows you to exchange contact information with someone simply by bringing your phones together. To use NameDrop, turn on AirDrop on both devices, then tap the Share button on your contact card and select AirDrop. The other person will receive a notification with your contact information.

Other new features in iOS 17 include:

  • A new Focus mode called Personal lets you customize your notifications and home screen for your personal life.
  • A new Live Text feature that allows you to extract text from images and videos.
  • A new SharePlay feature that lets you watch movies and TV shows with friends and family while on a FaceTime call.
  • A new Universal Control feature that lets you use your iPhone or iPad to control your Mac cursor and keyboard.
