World Population Day: A Look at the Past, Present, and Future

World Population Day, observed annually on July 11th, was established by the United Nations in 1989 to raise awareness about global population issues. The theme for World Population Day 2023 is "8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities: Advocating for Rights and Choices." Throughout the past centuries, the world's population has experienced rapid growth. In 1800, the global population stood at just over 1 billion, which then doubled to 2 billion by 1900. As of 2023, it is projected to reach 8 billion people. This significant population growth has had profound effects on the environment and global development.
