During a turbulent week at OpenAI, the firm faced significant disruption as its ChatGPT chatbot suffered an extensive outage on
Tuesday afternoon. Reports of technical glitches on the platform began to
escalate around 2 p.m. Pacific Time, according to outage monitoring service
Down Detector.
OpenAI acknowledged the problem on its status page,
indicating that the issue was impacting "non-completion API
endpoints" and mentioned that efforts were underway to rectify it. The
disruption was attributed to complications with database replicas.
As per a report from "Business Insider", an OpenAI
representative referred to a tweet from an OpenAI developer relations staff
member. The tweet acknowledged the heightened error rates affecting ChatGPT and
some API users, assuring that a resolution was imminent.
Further confirmation of the outage came from Business
Insider's own tests, where attempts to interact with ChatGPT resulted in error
messages, directing users to seek assistance at OpenAI's help center.
Such outages are not uncommon for ChatGPT, often coinciding
with the introduction of new functionalities. Notably, OpenAI had recently
announced a voice command-responsive version of ChatGPT at around 3 p.m.
Eastern Time.
Earlier in the month, ChatGPT had experienced another
outage, which OpenAI disclosed as a consequence of a DDoS attack - a deliberate
effort to overload the system.
The backdrop of these technical issues was a period of
upheaval within OpenAI, marked by the departure of CEO Sam Altman. While the
reasons behind his exit were not fully clarified by the company's board, there
is speculation about Altman's potential return to the organization.
